In this role you will have the opportunity to use your technical, analytical and mechanical talents to implement solutions for product improvement and sustaining activities.
You will analyze problems, determine root cause, and implement design changes to resolve known issues to improve quality.
Take designs from prototype to implementation while interacting with numerous cross-functional groups.
What you will do:
Create and analyze mechanical components, mechanisms, and part assemblies.
Projects may be associated with new product launches, sustaining efforts, or customer reported quality issues.
Establish and define design requirements, test acceptance criteria, test methods, and establish parameters to determine safety, durability, and feasibility.
Oversee any component tooling buy-off and product testing.
Functional collaboration between product and project management, purchasing, process engineering and management for product improvements.
Coordinate root cause analysis and manage communication of conclusions and recommended direction of short term and long term solutions.
Orchestrates test product builds & training while working in conjunction with the fabrication team to assure design for manufacturability of process and components.
Conducts audits, tests, inspections and data collection to validate the effectiveness of design changes.
Develops and prepares project timelines and budgets for assigned projectsUses primary design skills revolving around plastic injection molding along with aluminum and plastic extrusions and mechanical assemblies.
Secondary skills involve die casting, metal stamping, and machined parts.
Ability to conduct rapid prototyping to validate and adjust designs using such techniques as 3D printing.
Designs may be used to induce motion or simply for aesthetic, quality, cost reduction or ergonomic needs.
Assembly knowledge of plastic components useful to establish robust end use products.
Mechanical aptitude is a must and proven ability to innovate, create, and envision new product ideas and solutions.
Conducts design reviews, produces tolerance stack-up analysis, validates data with statistical analysis, run FMEA assessment and establish design robustness for product durability.
Responsible for component and assembly design for manufacturing review.
Design for six sigma experience highly encouraged.
Communicates with suppliers to source materials needed for tooling projects.
Participates in determining the best course of action regarding piece part cost/tooling cost/projected volumes.
Assists representatives from other departments in making design changes to components or systems.
Assist in training of fabrication employees on new design/process changes.
Lends technical assistance to representatives of other departments, such as Marketing, in the writing of product installation instructions, technical bulletins, fabrication manuals, and general component inquiries from customers.
May assist in presenting at product training seminars.
Attends trade shows and peruses trade publications to maintain a current level of knowledge of materials available for tooling purposes.

Work closely with plant operations, drive cost reductions in scrap and labor cost, through product design improvementsQUALIFICATIONS AND KSAsSolid knowledge of injection molding with plastics and the properties of engineered plastics.
Solid knowledge of extrusions.
Solid knowledge in the area of mechanical engineering along with mechanical dynamics and statics.
Solid knowledge of spatial reasoning in designing stand-alone components, or those working in conjunction with other components.
Solid knowledge in Root Cause Analysis, including Six Sigma Tools to analyze data.
Solid knowledge in computer use and software, such as MS Office, Project, Minitab and CAD systems, preferably NX or SolidWorks.
Solid knowledge in use of metrology instruments, such as calipers, gauges, comparators, and vision systemsSolid knowledge of various mechanisms and their applications, including gear systems, clutches, cams, and pulleysSkill and use of machine shop equipment, such as a lathe and end mill.
Ability to read and understand engineering drawings/prints and electrical schematics.
Ability to use correct grammar and punctuation to maintain laboratory notebooks and prepare project proposals.
Ability to analyze cause and effect relationships involved with engineering design.
Ability to synthesize information sources to arrive at a solution.
Ability to work with principles of geometry and physics to calculate the design and performance capability of components.
Acceptable training and experience includes a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or experience designing mechanical components.
Experience with solid modeling systems, particularly NX or SolidWorks desired.
1-3 years of applicable experience required.
